Description
The commemorative coins depict an open book. On one page is a quote from Jakob Hurt, the first president of the Society of Estonian Literati — “If we cannot be great in numbers, we must be great in spirit” — alongside the society’s founding year, 1872. Founded in Viljandi and active in Tartu, the society contributed to advancing Estonian-language literature in order to raise the cultural level of the Estonian people.
One million coins were minted, of which 10,000 are of BU (brilliant uncirculated) quality and packaged as a commemorative coin card. The coins were minted by the Mint of Finland and designed by Riho Luuse.
